Arrayed waveguide lens for beam steering

Abstract Integrated planar lenses are critical components for analog optical information processing that enable a wide range of applications including beam steering. Conventional require gradient index control which makes their on-chip realization challenging. Here, we introduce new approach steering by designing an array coupled waveguides with segmented tails allow simultaneously achieving lensing and off-chip radiation. The proposed arrayed waveguide lens is built on engineering the evanescent coupling between adjacent channels to realize photonic lattice equi-distant ladder propagation constants emulates continuous parabolic profile. Through coupled-mode analysis full-wave numerical simulations, show selective excitation enables large field-of-views ∼60°. can serve as compact component in integrated circuits imaging, sensing, metrology.
